Childbirth

“A Childbirth and Childcare Lump-Sum Grant” is paid when an insured person gives birth. “A Dependents' Childbirth and Childcare Lump-Sum Grant” is paid when a dependent family member gives birth. Don't forget to add the newborn as a dependent in these cases.

Request a Childbirth and Childcare Lump-Sum Grant

When using the system of direct payment of Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant to medical institutions

Submit the documents on agreement to use the system to the medical care institution or other facility where you plan to give birth. (You need not take any action with respect to the Health Insurance Society. For details, check with the medical care institution or other facility where you plan to give birth.)

Since the additional benefit (90,000 yen) independently provided by the Society is not eligible for the system of direct payment of Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant to medical institutions, you must apply separately to the Society for the additional benefit when using this system. (The additional benefit is paid directly to the insured person.)

If the amount of childbirth costs was less than the legally required amount of the Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant (420,000 yen, or 404,000 yen at a medical care institution not a member of the maternity medical care compensation scheme 500,000 yen for births on or after 4/1/2023; 484,000 yen for births at non-subscribing medical institutions), you will be paid the difference, along with the additional benefit.
